Who first used the balayage hair highlighting method and how was it discovered?

It originated in France. Hairdressers get bored and I'm sure one day some one said ';Hmmmm...What would happen if I painted lightener and different shades of color, free hand, on this client's hair?'; Voila! Balayage is born.
